When doing research, we want to make sure that the information we are using is true and reliable, right? It is difficult construct solid arguments of our own if we're working with faulty information, or if we are not certain if the information we're working with is credible. That is why being able to evaluate information is such an important research skill. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

While it might not be the same as formal evaluation, we all evaluate information that we come across regularly. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
As an example, let's say you're scrolling through social media and you come across a post that makes a claim about a product that you are skeptical of. What do you do? You might go elsewhere to see what other people are saying about this product - does what others are saying corroborate the original claim you came across? Maybe you notice that the post is labelled as an advertisement and decide to not believe the claim, as the poster is trying to sell you something. Perhaps you just keep scrolling because the product isn't relevant to your interests. While old school evaluation checklists can potentially leave us vulnerable to websites\/sources that are posing as something they are not, they still cover evaluation criteria you will want to keep in mind during your evaluation efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
The standard evaluation criteria to keep in mind are - Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency, <\/strong>and Coverage<\/strong> (AAOCC).<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Authority <\/strong>involves looking into who the author is and what their credentials are. Do they have relevant experience that would allow them to write on the topic at hand? Have they been cited in the work of authors in a positive context?<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Accuracy\/Quality<\/strong> involves the information iteself. Can the information be verified in other sources? Are reliable sources cited? Objectivity <\/strong>involves determining how<\/em> objective the author is being with the information they present. Do they state the pupose of their publication (e.g. educating on a particular topic)? Do they acknowledge potential conflicts of interest that could prevent them from writing objectively about the topic at hand?<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Currency <\/strong>asks us to consider when something was published, and how important it is will vary depending on the topic you're researching. If the topic you're researching is in the sciences, then obtaining sources that have been published in the past several years is important, as developments in this field happen frequently. But if you are looking at the historical context of something, like how technology in education as evolved over time, you would want to grab sources published at many different points in time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Coverage <\/strong>considers how thoroughly the source covers the topic at hand. Does it back up other sources on the topic that you've read, or provide new information? We are constantly having information thrown at us from a limitless number of sources. At first glance, it can sometimes be difficult to determine who produced the information originally, for what purpose, and if it can be trusted. Knowing how to investigate a source can help us answer these questions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Some questions we might ask ourselves when investigating a source:<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Why has this content\/information been produced?<\/strong> (e.g. to inform, sell, influence\/persuade, entertain, or mislead\/confuse)<\/span><\/li>\n\t
Where does it originate from?<\/strong> (e.g. news organizations, reference sources, governments, research institutions, private individuals or groups)<\/span><\/li>\n\t

While you could do a Google search for the source to see if there are other sources talking about the \"who\" you're investigating, this can result in a lot of clicking around.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Have you ever seen a clip of a video online that caused you to draw a particular conclusion, only for that perspective to change when you viewed that clip in the context of the whole video? There are a few websites we can use to help us fact-check claims that we find:<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Snopes<\/a> - Snopes is one of the most well-known online fact-checkers (as well as the oldest). There are many topics covered, and each entry provides links to the sources that were used in the fact-checking process so that users can follow-up. They also have information on their website that details their fact-checking process.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Politifact<\/a> - much like Snopes, Politifact also includes the sources they've used to fact-check claims and provides information on their fact-checking process. Specific claims can be searched, or you can browse categories of topics covered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Media Bias\/Fact Check<\/a> - this site is useful when looking at news sources.
