In order for a search tool to give you information that relates to your specific need, you need to enter the right words: keywords. Keywords are words that describe an essential characteristic of the item(s) you're looking for. When we string several keywords together, this is considered a search string or query.<\/p>\n\n

Researching is an iterative cycle, which means that you may need to repeat your search multiple times, making adjustments to your search strategy as you go in order to obtain the information you need. When you run your first search, you may not know all the right keywords to use or the best places to look for the information you're seeking. It is common to feel uncertain and that's okay. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
In this lesson, you'll learn about all three parts of the search cycle shown on the right. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
We'll start with the first phase - assemble a search string.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Search tools like databases and Google are not smart. They function by matching the keywords you enter to words in sources, and then retrieving you those sources as results. They then rank results by how many keyword matches they find. This is why it is so important to tell them exactly what you want them to find. The more keywords you can think of, the greater the chance you'll find what you're looking for because every search tool uses a different set of keywords to items in their index or database. One search tool might use the keyword phrase \"flu shot\" while another might use \"influenze vaccine.\" Do your best to develop a list of several keywords for each main idea in your research question. <\/p>\n\n

When you enter words into a search tool, such as flu shots mandatory doctors nurses,<\/strong> you are telling the search tool that you want items that contain ALL of those keywords. Search tools often use an implied AND <\/strong>to combine all terms: flu AND shots AND mandatory AND doctors AND nurses. That means it will retrieve items for you that contain all of your keywords, even if the sources has nothing to do with doctors and nurses getting flu shots.<\/p>\n\n
AND is what is known as a Boolean Operator. Boolean Operators are words and symbols that allow you to conduct more efficient searches.
