When we read research papers, it is not like reading novels or textbooks. Research papers are those that introduce new information or new ideas into the scholarly literature[1]<\/strong> of a particular discipline.<\/p>\n\n

Research articles follow the conventions[2]<\/strong> of their discipline for structure and purpose. Once you are aware of these conventions, you can strategically approach how you read research.<\/p>\n\n

One of the first steps to reading strategically is knowing what information you are looking for. You then have to know where you are likely to find that information in a particular article.<\/p>\n\n

When we read research articles, it is usually to learn something new - whether to satiate your own curiosity or for an assignment. This can generate a lot of varied emotions. <\/p>\n\n
Research has shown that the emotions to the right are commonly felt when reading to learn. Sometimes when we're reading topics unfamiliar to ourselves, it can generate negative feelings. Whether we're reading them online or in print, scholarly articles tend to have a formal structure. While different disciplines might have different approaches when it comes to headings and overall structure, most articles will contain sections that serve a specific purpose. General Tips for Reading a Research Articles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Don't read the article start to finish. When reading a research article, it is not necessary or efficient to read start to finish. Instead, read it in stages or parts and feel free to skip and skim often, paying particular attention to parts that support you in answering your research question.<\/li>\n\t
Read the abstract, which provides a concise overview of what the article is about. If it doesn't seem relevant or useful to your research question after reading the abstract, move on to another article.<\/li>\n\t
Take notes while reading.
